Face Lift - The Best Candidates and the Right Age to Go in For One

Cosmetic Surgery Gone Wrong

A facelift increases the youthful appearance due to the surgical tightening of the lower three-fourths of the facial area. The saggy skin of the jowls, neck and chin-line are the areas that are especially targeted. The scars are well hidden in the hairline or behind the ears.

This surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon on an outpatient basis. The procedure takes from three to five hours to complete. A general anesthetic is usually chosen for use during the surgery with prescribed pain medication utilized during the early part of recovery. There will be swelling and bruising initially but should subside within three to six weeks.

The best candidates for this surgery are those that have the majority of their sagging areas in the lower part of the face. This procedure is targeted at those with excessive fat and skin folds in the jowl and neck area or a crease in the corner of their mouth below the nose. If the eyes or forehead are the droopy culprits, a brow or forehead lift would be more appropriate. If the troublesome spots are around the eyelids, than the surgical procedure of blepharoplasty would be more appropriate. If excessive wrinkling of skin is the main issue, the facelift wouldn't be the best choice. A facial resurfacing technique such as a chemical peel, dermabrasion, microdermabrasion, or a laser treatment might be more appropriate. Many times multiples procedures can be combined to get the optimum result.

The best candidates should be in good physical and emotional health, they shouldn't be undergoing treatment for a serious disease and they should have realistic expectations of what the results will be. Looking at "before and after" photos of facelift patients, especially those with similar skin type and sagging areas will give a helpful view of the probable outcome.

The most common age range for this procedure to be performed is from forty years old to seventy years old. The age that is optimum for each person will depend on their skin type and its condition. A more drastic result will be achieved on skin needing the most nips and tucks.

After the procedure has been completed and the patient has healed, not only will they look more rested, fresher and more attractive, but they will feel better too. It often gives one a whole new outlook on life. It is important to abstain from tobacco products and to wear a high SPF sunscreen in order to have the result last as long as possible. Both sun damage and cigarette smoking are aging. Once a person is back to looking their best, they will want to do all in their power to stay that way.
